Prophet Elijah lived on Mount Carmel and is known as the founder of the Carmelite order. After his life, men who got inspired by his life, moved up to the Mountain Carmel and lived. They called themselves Hermits. A chapel was built there and dedicated to Our Lady.
During the Muslim invasion of the region, they fled and later returned to reform the order with St. Simon Stock as the new head. On July, 1251, St. Simon Stock saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary in company of the angels and bearing the infant Jesus. She was also holding the brown scapular which she gave to him. She asked them to make a habit out of it and wear. She promised that all who died wearing it piously will not suffer eternal damnation.
Another apparition of Our Lady of Mount Carmel took place on March 3 1322, She appeared to Pope John XXII. She told him that she would grant Sabbatine privilege to the souls of all those who died wearing the brown scapular of Mount Carmel piously. She promised to descend to Purgatory on the first Saturday after their death and free their souls and take them with her to heaven.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel also appeared during the Miracle of the sun in Fatima and Castelpetroso in Italy. The brown scapulars of St. Alphonsus Lugori and St. John Bosco were found to be intact upon exhumation. Pope John Paul II was also a member of the Carmelite order and wore his scapular till death.
